Caravan to America: Living Arts of the Silk Road by John Major, X
This summer the cellist Yo-Yo Ma highlights a year devoted to his Silk Road Project at the spectacular National Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. Through exhibits, concerts, and lectures, the festival celebrates the arts, crafts, and music of the lands along the ancient trade route. Through telling interviews, lavish color photos, maps, and intriguing sidebars, this book captures all the vitality of the project, honoring cultural traditions that flourish along the Silk Road and the ways they are affirmed or altered in America. From the stories of eight artists from Silk Road lands who now live in America, young readers sample recipes with a Persian cook, dodge the moves of a Korean martial artist, and pluck the strings of a Greek oud, the ancestor of the lute and guitar.

Secrets of Ancient Cultures: The Inca by Arlette N. Braman,
Fun, educational activities that bring ancient Inca culture to life At its height, the Inca empire extended nearly 3,000 miles across parts of present-day Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. The Inca excelled at organization and engineering, building incredible temples, walls and roads; but their empire was destroyed by Europeans and plague. This volume in the Secrets of Ancient Cultures series explains Inca civilization with projects and activities that provide an intimate perspective on Inca daily life, social structure, food, art, science, and entertainment. Projects include making an Inca tunic, writing an Inca poem, preparing a quinoa snack, keeping track of one’ s life using multicolored knotted strings, and sculpting an Inca jug. In addition to the activities, author Arlette Braman provides a wealth of fascinating background information on Inca cultural traditions, politics, and history. Arlette N. Braman (Stroudsburg, PA), a former teacher, is the author of Secrets of Ancient Cultures: The Maya as well as Kids Around the World Create! (0-471-29005-X), Kids Around the World Cook!
